November Marketing Updates: What to Act On First

Search, ads, social, and WordPress all shifted this week. Rather than walk through every headline, here are the updates ranked by how soon they need your attention.

Do Right Awaydigital marketing

Update WordPress to 7.1.3. The release closes seven security holes, including stored XSS, a second-order SQL injection, and a denial-of-service bug. Others involve Author-role users sticking posts, unauthenticated comment exposure, XSS in Imgur embeds, and forgeable parameters that cause action name collisions. WordPress hasn’t published severity ratings or confirmed attacks in the wild, but it advises updating immediately. A separate critical bug can also break image uploads on hosts that lack PHP’s optional DOM extension.

Check your Search Console data. Google’s September spam update finished after 13 days and 16 hours, running from September 24 to October 8. Google didn’t say which tactics it went after. Compare rankings, impressions, and clicks from before and after, and read Google’s spam policies before editing anything if you lost ground. Recovery can take months.

Plan This Month

Content standards are tightening. Google updated its helpful content guidance around the same time as the Gemini 4 Argon launch, which hints at a core update ahead. The page now defines “Main Content” as whatever fulfills the page’s purpose, and it spells out four qualities:

  • Effort: human-made work is favored over AI-generated filler
  • Originality: unique data or viewpoints stand out
  • Skill and experience: technical authority for YMYL topics, firsthand experience for community content
  • Accuracy: unchecked AI hallucinations are called out

Fake personas, invented bios, and misleading bylines are also flagged as deceptive authorship. Review your content and author pages against the full guidelines.

Performance Max finally supports real tests. Advertisers can now run controlled experiments on headlines, descriptions, images, and videos inside an asset group. Good first tests include new concepts versus current assets, UGC-style versus polished creative, and adding video. The asset group is locked once the test begins, so plan the setup carefully.

ChatGPT ads are getting more testable. OpenAI will trial a visual ad format during image generation later this month with select US advertisers. It also added links with Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp, incrementality pilots with Fospha, Measured, Haus, and INCRMNTAL, and brand suitability pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science. With 1.2 billion weekly users, it’s worth checking whether your attribution or CDP partner is supported.

Beauty brands, look at search. Asked where they go first with a beauty question, shoppers answered Google (43%), Instagram (11.9%), YouTube (11.2%), TikTok (10.6%), and AI tools (9.8%). They use Google for comparisons, ingredients, and reviews, so product pages deserve as much care as social content.

Prepare for Later

Display campaigns move to Demand Gen in early 2027. Eligible campaigns will be migrated, adding YouTube, Discover, Gmail, and Maps inventory. The tradeoff is less audience control as optimized targeting widens. Review conversion tracking, audiences, and budgets ahead of time.

Two Google Ads reporting additions

  • Video and funnel reporting: the Overview page shows video impressions in conversion paths and a new Performance by stage card. GA4-imported conversions are excluded, and an impression in a path doesn’t prove it caused the sale.
  • Video Campaign Groups (beta): group Video and Demand Gen campaigns to remove duplicate audiences or set a shared frequency target. Watch whether unique reach grows without raising spend.

Social Platform Notes

  • TikTok’s AI tools: At Advertising Week New York, the MCP connector gained support for Claude, Perplexity, Snowflake, and the IAB Tech Lab Registry, so brands can build campaigns and review results from AI tools they already use.
  • TikTok’s economic report: PF Global surveyed over 11,000 consumers and 5,000 businesses and estimated 410,000 jobs and $13 billion in federal tax revenue tied to the platform, with $81 billion in US economic value. Of the businesses surveyed, 93% saw higher sales and 84% reached new customers, which is useful data for budget discussions.
  • TikTok agency tiers: A Premier Agency Partner badge now sits above the Agency Partner badge. Agencies can’t apply for it, since TikTok’s regional team has to nominate them for HQ approval. Ask about tiers when vetting a partner.
  • YouTube Shorts: Channels that mostly repost others’ clips with little change will lose views. Commenting, remixing, and quoting remain acceptable, so add original framing, voiceover, or commentary.
  • Instagram: An opt-in test opens the app on the Reels tab, echoing a Meta test on Facebook in India. A new sticker also drops liked, saved, or written Threads posts into Stories, and Threads has passed 400 million monthly users.

Your To-Do List

  • Update WordPress sites to 7.1.3
  • Compare Search Console data across the spam update window
  • Audit content against Google’s helpful content guidance
  • Set up an A/B test on a Performance Max asset group
  • Confirm your attribution partner supports ChatGPT Ads
  • Replace reposted Shorts with original takes and add Reels to your plan
  • Look into TikTok’s MCP connector and Premier Partner status
